Service self care
Correct routine maintenance of the bicycle increases its lifetime and reliability and assures a high level of safety
First service

After about 300 km or in any case within 2 months of purpose, it is essential to carry out the first service.
Given the mechanical nature of many of the bicycle’s components, soon after purchase some of the fastening systems may become loose during normal use of the bicycle, thus reducing its safety. When this period has elapsed, you should contact your Dealer for the “First service”.

Routine maintenance

For subsequent routine maintenance, the frequency of the maintenance operations will depend on the type of climate and conditions of use. The wetter and dustier the environment, the more frequently maintenance must be performed. Besides environmental factors, the frequency of maintenance also depends on the characteristics of the cyclist. The heavier the cyclist and the more intense the physical activity carried out, the more frequently maintenance must be performed. If the cyclist is heavier than 82 kg/180 lbs, the bicycle must be inspected frequently and carefully. The only products needed for routine maintenance are: synthetic grease, degreasers, penetrating oil, water-based cleaners and polish. If you are unsure where to purchase these products, ask your Dealer.
In any case, if any component should break or appear not to be working properly, it is essential that you return to your Dealer and ask him to check the problem.

Routine maintenance of frame

During routine maintenance and checks, make sure that there is no sign of damage anywhere on the surface of the frame, particularly in the area around the bottom bracket, the area below the head tube and the area around the rear fork ends (the part of the frame that holds the rear wheel axle). For a precise and thorough check, keep the frame clean, but do not use solvent- or alcohol-based cleaning products which might damage the surface.

Routine maintenance of the front fork and headset

Just like the frame, the fork also requires thorough visual inspection. Check that there is no sign of damage at the critical points, namely the fork crown and the fork ends (the part of the fork that holds the front wheel axle).
Always keep the fork clean. Use only specific water-based products. If necessary, lubricate the headset using specific lubricant and remove excess with a non-scratch dry cloth.
WARNING: The presence of small cracks or other types of damage on the frame or the fork may jeopardise the safety of your bicycle and lead to the risk of injury or death. If in doubt, contact your Dealer.

Routine maintenance of wheels

The wheels consist of the following elements:
• central hub
• spokes
• rim
• inner tube
• tyre
Each individual element requires routine maintenance.

Routine maintenance of hub

The wheel’s hub is the mechanical element that allows it to turn without friction. Given its mechanical nature, it must be kept well lubricated and free of dust to avoid rapid wear and the presence of excessive play. Check that it does not produce strange noises and that its rotation is not hindered by foreign matter in the bearings.
Check that the spokes have not torn the holes in the hub and there are no defects anywhere on its surface.
Always keep the hub clean. Use only specific water-based products. Keep the hub axles well lubricated and always remove excess lubricant using a non-scratch cloth. Do not use pressurised water jets such as water jet machines or garden hoses.
NOTE: Avoid washing these components with direct water jets. The excess water might penetrate inside
the hub and corrode mechanical parts.

Routine maintenance of spokes

Check that the spokes are taut and evenly tensioned. Check that there are no broken or deformed spokes.
If the wheel sways or is buckled, this may be due to loose spokes. Ask your Dealer to check the spokes and adjust the tension so as to rebalance the wheel if it is buckled.
WARNING: You are advised to have the wheels checked by your Dealer. Given the mechanical nature and difficulty of being sure that they are perfectly safe, you are advised to ask your Dealer to check all the wheel components to maintain a high level of safety.
Use only specific water-based products to clean the spokes.

Routine maintenance of rims

Many rims have a groove in the middle of the brake pad contact zone known as the “wear limit”. Make sure that there are no signs of wear by checking the depth of the groove. For further information, contact your Dealer. Always keep the rim clean. Use only specific water-based products.
WARNING: The use of unsuitable cleaning products may alter the braking action of the brake pads, placing your safety and that of others at risk.
WARNING: A worn rim may jeopardise the stability and safety of the bicycle.

Routine maintenance of the inner tube

Check that the pressure valve does not leak air and that there are no signs of damage or lacerations at the base of the valve in proximity to the rim exit hole. Check that the valve is perpendicular to the rim and that the inner tube has not slipped out of its position and dragged the valve with it.
WARNING: The edges of the hole in the rim may lacerate the inner tube and cause it to puncture, which may jeopardise the stability and safety of the bicycle. Contact your Dealer to check that there are no lacerations on the inner tube to assure the stability and safety of the bicycle.

Routine maintenance of tyres

Thoroughly check the surface of the tread and sidewalls to ensure that there are no signs of damage, deterioration or cracking. Check that the tyres are inflated correctly in accordance with the values stated by the manufacturer. If the information is not sufficiently clear, contact your Dealer. Clean the tyres before every use. Check that the tread is free of any matter that might affect grip with the road surface. Only use specific water-based cleaning products. Do not use solvents or products deriving from mineral oils.
WARNING: An incorrect tyre inflation pressure may result in loss of control of the bicycle and place your safety at serious risk.

Routine maintenance of brakes

Always check that the brakes work correctly before using the bicycle. Check that the brake pads are correctly positioned, that there are no obstructions between the brake pad contact surface and the wheel rim and that the surface of the brake pads is not damaged or worn. Check that the steel brake cables are not damaged or worn and that there are no obstructions to their movement. Check that the brake levers located on the handlebars are not damaged. Check that they operate the brake pads correctly.
Keep the mechanical parts of the brake system clean and well lubricated at all times. Do not use unsuitable cleaning products and lubricate with specific oil only.
For further information refer to the manufacturer’s instruction handbook or follow the instructions given by your Dealer.
WARNING: Incorrect operation of the braking system may place your safety and that of others at serious risk.

Routine maintenance of the cables and cable housings

As with brake cables, cleaning and lubrication is also very important in the case of gear shift cables.
Check that there are no signs of damage or dirt on the surface of the cables or the outer cable housing.
Clean the cables and cable housings using specific water-based cleaning products. Lubricate using specific oil and remove excess.
For further information refer to the manufacturer’s instruction handbook or follow the instructions given by your Dealer.

Routine maintenance of the chain, chainwheels, sprocket cluster and bottom bracket

Check that the chain shows no sign of wear or damage. Keep the chainwheels, sprocket cluster and chain clean at all times using specific products. Do not clean the surfaces of mechanical parts with abrasives such as steel brushes or emery cloth. Lubricate using special chain oil.
For further information refer to the manufacturer’s instruction handbook or follow the instructions given by your Dealer.

Routine maintenance of the front and rear derailleur

If you hear strange noises coming from the front or rear derailleur, you will need to adjust the controls. To correct the position of the front or rear derailleur, refer to the manufacturer’s instruction handbook or follow the instructions given by your Dealer.
Keep the mechanical parts of the front and rear derailleur clean and well lubricated at all times. Do not use unsuitable cleaning products and lubricate with specific oil only.
For further information refer to the manufacturer’s instruction handbook or follow the instructions given by your Dealer.
WARNING: The front and rear derailleurs must be used according to precise rules determined by the manufacturer. If these rules are not observed, the mechanical components of the drive train may deteriorate very rapidly.

Routine maintenance of pedals

Pedals must be kept constantly clean and checked at least once a year. The surface of the pedal on which the foot rests must always assure an excellent grip with the shoes. For this reason cleaning must be performed thoroughly and using only special water-based cleaning products.
The pedal axles have pairs of bearings that facilitate movement. These mechanical components must be kept well lubricated and free of dust. To lubricate the bearings, only specific oil is recommended. Apply the lubricating oil and be sure to remove all excess.
NOTE: Some types of pedals have step-in systems for rapidly clipping footwear to (and releasing from) the pedal. Check that the correct operation of these systems is not affected by obstructions or dust. For more detailed explanation, refer to the pedal manufacturer’s instruction booklet or ask your Dealer.
WARNING: Excess oil may end up on the surface of the pedal, reducing the grip between the pedal and footwear and placing your safety at risk.
NOTE: If you are unable to find where to buy specific lubricant oils and cleaning products, ask your Dealer.

Routine maintenance of the seat post

The seat post must be kept clean at all times. For cleaning, use only specific water-based products.
Continuous repositioning of the seat post relative to the frame may lead to rapid wear of the contact surfaces between the two parts. This problem can be reduced by thoroughly cleaning the contact surfaces, removing any dust that may be present and cleaning with a soft, non-scratch cloth.
WARNING: The use of oily or unsuitable cleaning products may reduce the grip between the seat post and the frame, leading to serious risks for your safety.
